At a distance of roughly 60 miles northeast of the epicenter, the capital of Gansu province, Lanzhou, experienced the earthquake.

under the nearby provinces of Qinghai and Gansu, search and rescue efforts were under progress. According to media sources, the temblor destroyed homes and roads, injured over 300 people, and cut off electricity and communication connections.

The earthquake, which struck at a depth of six miles on Monday night, claimed the lives of 100 people in the province of Gansu and an additional 11 in the nearby province of Qinghai, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

The earthquake occurred near the Jishishan county of Gansu, just three miles from the Qinghai provincial boundary. The Chinese capital, Beijing, is located roughly 800 miles southwest of the epicenter.

As of early this morning, CCTV reported that over 300 people had received medical attention for injuries. 96 more people were hurt in Gansu and at least 140 in Qinghai, according to the official Xinhua News Agency and CCTV.

The temblor’s magnitude was estimated by the US Geological Survey to be 5.9.

Transportation and communications infrastructure, as well as electrical and water lines, were all claimed to have been damaged by state broadcaster CCTV.

About 60 miles northeast of the epicenter, in Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province, the earthquake was felt.

A social media post with pictures of young people hurriedly leaving a building and standing outside appeared to indicate that university students in Lanzhou hurried out of their dormitory. Wang Xi, a Lanzhou University student who posted the tweet, stated that many people dressed merely in their pajamas on a chilly winter’s evening.

She declared, “The earthquake was too intense.” “My legs felt weak, especially after running from the dorm downstairs.”

According to CCTV, foldable beds, comforters, and tents were being sent to the disaster region. In order to reduce the number of victims, it cited Chinese Premier Xi Jinping as advocating for a comprehensive search and rescue operation. According to the China Meteorological Administration, the overnight low in the region was between 5 and 16 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Ministry of Emergency Management released a video in which they could be seen attempting to move large chunks of what appeared to be concrete rubble at night with rods while wearing orange uniforms. Other late-night footage released by state media shown rescuers hoisting a casualty out of the way and assisting a man who was tripping a little to walk in a lightly snow-covered region.

According to a Xinhua story, Ma Shijun, a middle school student, fled his dorm barefoot and without even donning a coat. It reported that the powerful tremors had rendered his hands somewhat numb and that the teachers had promptly arranged the pupils on the playground.

In the hilly region of western China that forms the eastern border of the Tibetan plateau, temblor occur occasionally.

In September of last year, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck Sichuan, a region in southwest China. The earthquake caused landslides and rocked structures in Chengdu, the provincial capital, placing 21 million people under a Covid-19 lockdown. At least 74 people were reported killed in the incident.

The deadliest earthquake to strike China in recent memory occurred in Sichuan in 2008, with a magnitude of 7.9 and approximately 90,000 fatalities. After the earthquake destroyed towns, schools, and rural villages outside of Chengdu, reconstruction efforts using stronger materials lasted for years.
