Walmart already has a substantial presence in the US. Yet, the massive retailer sees opportunity to go much farther.

Over the next five years, the business intends to construct or renovate more than 150 large-format shops, it said on Wednesday. A business representative, Josh Havens, said that although some of the sites would be converted from smaller ones into Supercenters offering a comprehensive selection of food and goods, the bulk will be brand-new establishments.

Walmart refuses to provide information on the locations and prices of the new shops. The corporation currently operates roughly 600 Sam’s Club warehouses and more than 4,600 shops nationwide. Sam’s Club intends to establish more than 30 additional locations throughout the United States as part of its growth strategy.

With over 1.6 million workers, the big-box retailer is the biggest private employer in the United States. Approximately 90% of Americans currently reside within ten miles of a Walmart location. With the expansion, Walmart is indicating that, despite increased competition from online competitors like Shein and Amazon, as well as its own drive for growth in online sales and its third-party marketplace, it still views its physical stores as an important component of the future.

Additionally, Walmart is strengthening its position relative to other retailers, which have suffered more from American customers cutting down on discretionary spending. Walmart, the biggest grocery shop in the country by sales and a well-known bargain retailer, has fared better against inflation and has even drawn more affluentΒ customers to its locations.

The corporation announced a 3-for-1 stock split on Tuesday, after an all-time high for its shares last year.

Walmart U.S. CEO John Furner announced the firm’s intentions to launch 12 new store projects this year and to turn one of its smaller sites into a Walmart Supercenter in a post on the business website on Wednesday. In addition to renovating existing shops, the firm also wants to build or expand sites, he said.

According to Furner, Walmart is expanding its contemporary aesthetic, which will be reflected in the new shops. Sharper signage, scannable QR codes, and a slimmer layout highlight the retailer’s fashion-forward clothing brands in the “store of the future” concept.

New shops would also include additional sustainability elements, such as energy-efficient lighting, he added.

The Wall Street Journal was the first to report about Walmart’s retail growth.
